Crawl space under the kitchen - The Excavation
Before the digging began, there was not enough room for an adult to crawl in and do any sort of work needed under the kitchen:

To our immense surprise, there is some sort of structure under there! It is not under the cistern opening, and there is no opening above that framed-in square.
